A precision: I created etc/xinetd.d/xtel  and copied the string
mentioned in the previous comment but that didn't work, simply because
as  indicated by Julien in the ubuntu-users-fr mailing list, one also
has to install xinetd package (using synaptic for example, it is not
installed by default).

Once xinetd was installed xtel worked much better; here's the output of
the terminal:

Well, it seems that there's a little problem with dependencies (I'm using 
Ubuntu 6.06 will all updates installed). As I'm having problems with my 
softmodem, I couldn't test further, sorry.
