I am sorry, but I can't proceed any test anymore because I don't have this laptop anymore as my company provided me with a new (more powerful) one.
Actually, the few tests that I could perform on Unity2D did not hang. However, the screen resolution was too poor for using it many hours. Your hypothesis about the outdated kernel is interesting.
