Hi John, Probably the best thing to do here would be to suggest this on the util-linux mailing list (see http://vger.kernel.org/vger-lists.html#util-linux ). I'm fairly sure I've seen programmes similar to this to strip escape and control characters before; so it might be worth searching around for them.
