Here's a workaround that has been working for me for a couple of weeks. Add the following to /etc/rc.local, replace /dev/hdc with your CD/DVD's device node. hal-disable-polling --device /dev/hdc
Caveat: You will need to manually mount your CD/DVD (for example: pmount /media/cdrom ).
