Actually, it is still here. I noticed something different today, perhaps the compat-wireless workaround was conflated.
Ping times are fine, when AC (mains) power is plugged in. When I'm on battery is when the ping times go up to 500+ms. I'm usually plugged in, so I perhaps thought that the compat-wireless fixed it. sudo iwconfig wlan0 power off actually fixed it.
