The scanner stopped working as of 10.10. scanimage must be the problem. Using VueScan the scanner works immediately (without any noticable delay) and repetitively. Using scanimage the scanner stops working after the 5th line and has to be reset (using Windows and Canons ScanGear Toolbox or VueScan).
