Ok.. something is definatly wrong somewhere. But a temporary solution is
to:

$ apt-get source azureus
$ cd azureus-2.4.0.2
$ rm debian/patches/azureus-themed.patch
$ fakeroot debian/rules binary
$ cd ..
$ sudo dpkg -i azureus_2.4.0.2-0ubuntu2_all.deb

This will make azureus run with the default look instead of pretty
icons. But for me that's better than not running at all. I suspect that
libgtk-java is somehow broken, or incompatible with the patch due to a
newer version.
