What Raymond is getting at is there are 3 jacks on the lefthand side. One
is for Headphones/Digital, Line In and Microphone. Either of these ports
can be configured to whatever pulse audio want them to be. The HDMI
digital sound comes from the NVIDIA soundchip built into the NVIDIA 9600M
graphics card. Because there are 2 sound cards in the Aspire 8930 I think
pulseaudio gets a little confused which one to auto-mute on startup.

To enable disable auto-mute open up a terminal and type alsamixer it can be
switched on/off there.

For my Acer Aspire 8930G I have the pulseaudio output set to Stereo Duplex,
everything seems to be working just fine with that setting. I am now
running 12.10 Beta 2
