this is a workaround use dconf-editor and add either all or pidgin to the whitelist in desktop>unity>panel systray-whitelist mine looks like this systray-whitelist['all'] it seems if pidgin isnt in a tray of some sort it gets buggered. good luck hope pidgin is added as default in the future to white-list
