Update of Sept. 25th 2012 broke the auto-hide function on a previous system LTS 12.04 updated til 24th Sept.. Bug is quite annoying. Alt-F1 and super key lets the panel appear.
For yet no workarounds. You have to switch the auto-hide on off in order to abtain the fixed panle.
