NVIDIA's 96.43.23 (32 bit) works for me on an ASUS 8170 GeForce4 MX 440. My only issue was "The distribution-provided pre-install script failed!" but I accepted the default option "Yes" to continue installing anyway. Because I have a display with a rather odd display resolution I had to edit xorg.conf to get it included. I still have the old (dead) "96.43.20", the "173" and "current" in the package list from x-swat but presumably they will updated in time and I shall clean up everything then.
