This (the "ssl" part of it) should avoid the hangs during STARTTLS.

Please add "sslcertck" (without quotes) after "ssl" and try if fetchmail
continues to work. This should make fetchmail disconnect if the
certificates cannot properly be verified for some reason.

Depends on how you attain root privileges; a full "su -" equivalent
should permit you to run fetchmail as root, albeit with protests that
you should not do that (unless Ubuntu used to patch fetchmail, which I
have not checked).

That is what the packagers should do as Stable Release Updates, anyways,
and they should disregard diff size if most of it stems from Makefile.*
and configure.* and po/* diffs...

Thanks a lot for this elucidating feedback, most appreciated.
I know what the options are doing, so it is hard for me to judge how
their message will come across to users. I will clean up the relevant
code and warning for the future releases.
