@Yoshida-san: Huh, that fixed the subtitle problem and removed the need for ttf-kochi- mincho. I didn't have '/etc/fonts/conf.avail/69-language-selector-ja- jp.conf' with Ubuntu 12.04 until now, though I followed all of the directions for Japanese localization here: http://www.ubuntulinux.jp/japanese
