So, after reporting this bug, I did a reboot, full memtest86+ pass (no
errors), and went on my way.

I was running GIMP this time, trying to "open location" (which failed)
when I got the same bug.

Honestly I have no clue.  It just HAPPENS out of NOWHERE, some random thing 
goes wrong, and then I go happily along my way.
