Ok progress!!!!

I downloaded the latest main branch kernel (3.6.0-030600rc5-generic
#201209082035 SMP Sun Sep 9 00:36:02) and I no longer get bus resets!!!

It isn't all plain sailing, I did notice that the hot swappable function
didn't appear to work (when I inserted disks Linux did not detect it) so
I had to reboot, but when the system came back I could create RAID array
etc. without errors.

I have coped across > 1TB of data and so far all looks OK. I will
continue testing.
