The current kernel (linux-
image-3.6.0-999-generic_3.6.0-999.201209060408_i386.deb) won't boot.
The machine drops to a BusyBox shell after the following error:
"
[0.000000] ACPI: BIOS age (520) fails cutoff (2000), acpi=force is required to
enable ACPI
[0.175354] PNPBIOS fault.. attempting recovery,
[0.175414] PnPBIOS: Warning! Your PnP BIOS caused a fatal error. Attempting to
continue
[0.175467] PnPBIOS: You may need to boot with the "pnpbios=off" option to
operate stably
[0.175520] PbPBIOS: Check with your vendor for an updated BIOS
[0.175572] PnPBIOS: dev_node_info: unexpected status 0x24
[0.175622] PhPBIOS: Unable to get node info. Aborting.

"
There is no more recent version of the BIOS for this model of machine,
the Packard Bell Easynote (PB42BD0291)
Rebooting and adding "pnpbios=off" to the linux arguments using Grub is
not able to boot either, it still drops to BusyBox. The previous
version of Linux-image (linux-image-3.5.0-13-generic) is still able to
boot.
