Thanks, Thomas, for your report. Unfortunately, pdftk with included debug symbols seems to not give better output in this case.
But the open_reader bug should have been already fixed in pdftk 1.44-5 (Natty has 1.44-1). I made a backport from the current 1.44-6 version for Natty.
