After a bit of digging (encountered the same error during an install), the 
problem turns out to be that "gksu" is using "su" for authentication. But in 
ubuntu, "su" is locked by default (that is to say, the root account password is 
locked by default).
To fix, run "gksu-properties" and change authentication to "sudo".
Don't know if this default setting (using su for authentication) should count 
as a bug or not.
