Yes, it looks like in quantal, we should have modified: /etc/X11/Xsession.d/50_check_unity_support to export LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 if the support test fails, thus enabling LLVMpipe.
It seems what we've done instead is just delete the file.
