No, it is not due to a regression, every Linux version that has ever been on it has had the same problem and will continue to have the same problem until a patch is submitted. No updates have made a difference. The problem is no doubt due to the Nvidia graphics on the laptop. I believe the Nvidia chipset handles the screen brightness. I believe it has a geforce 105M.
