Update: I've gotten Dropbox working by downloading it from the website
and using the Deb installer (which, conveniently, is offered by
default).

So the situation is this, it seems. There are three possible ways to
install Dropbox:

1. Download it from the Dropbox website and install it with the Deb installer.
2. Follow the procedure recommended on the Dropbox website.
3. Install nautilus-dropbox using Synaptic or another Ubuntu package installer.

All three of these are plausible, but only the first one yields a
working Dropbox (for me, at least).
