For Linux, it's all too common for sound hardware not to work perfectly. A lot of it comes from the Azalia/"High-Def" Audio standard being a very loose standard and giving manufacturers flexibility in the audio implementation. It's great for manufacturers, but not great for an open-source OS that doesn't always get full cooperation from manufacturers and has to add a special quirk to the driver for almost every new piece of hardware. The ALSA devs cope the best they can...
