I advise you to try to package for Debian instead of Ubuntu. If you package for Debian your packages will made their way automatically on Ubuntu (Ubuntu just picks the majority of their packages directly from Debian), but the reverse is not true: if you package directly for Ubuntu your packages won't be available on Debian.
