FWIW, I have noticed this behavior as well. Confronted with a black screen I ctrl-alt-f1 to a console and then back (actually, I tend to walk back along f2, f3... but that isn't necessary, I'm just weird). This brings back the screen so I think there is just an screen update missing somewhere.
