So... I'm not really sure what's happening. I've booted from 9.04 (2.6.28-11) on CD and the problem -- "usb_submit_urb(ctrl) failed" -- is there It's there too on 10.04 (2.6.32-21) and 12.04 (3.2.0-23) booted from CD. The rason I think I didn't notivce is that other processes were takign longer to complete (/O waits) and so the gap before usb_submit_urb failed is shorter, but the command fails in all cases, irrespective of whether the kernel is on a hard disk, a solid state disk or a CD
