I have the same problem with both Unity 3D and Gnome Classic. My solution is to log into Gnome Classic (no effects) where Metacity is the window manager. That works fine. Any session with Compiz in it, be it Unity 3D or Gnome Classic results in a total freeze including TTY1-6. I'm running 12.04 on a Vostro 1014 with Intel graphics.
