Added note:

Installing alsa-hda-dkms from ubuntu-audio-dev/alsa-daily on 20120715
fixed the sound problem.

These instructions were found in this thread
(http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1950165.html):
---
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/alsa-daily
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install alsa-hda-dkms

Reboot.
Go to System Settings > Sound and adjust settings, test speakers.
---

Both Thunderbird and Firefox work as expected now.

This bug report deals with applications locking up on the Ubuntu
desktop. It is obvious this was due to sound difficulties. However,
even though the Original Poster's problems have been solved, is there
still a bug in the Ubuntu desk top? That is, is it still a bug that the
Thunderbird and Firefox applications locked up when Ubuntu's sound was
compromised?

-thanks
