Hi!

After the "emergency" update a few weeks ago, I've been working with
getting a more permanent fix upstream, so that we don't have to add
quirks for every machine affected by this problem.

In essence, the long-term fixes are now committed upstream:
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/tiwai/sound.git;a=commit;h=80c8bfbe76869bfd6bdf3d260d316e7a32f318c3
 (scheduled for Linux 3.6)
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/commit/?id=0621b1f99c0b5ddc7a01d261dab8e4cc5aec63c3

It would be good to have some confirmation that these patches do what
they should, as I don't have any affected hardware myself. Maybe one or
a few of you who are more experienced/savvy Ubuntu users could do this
to test:

1) if your machine is quirked, comment out that quirk in
/lib/udev/rules.d/90-pulseaudio.rules
2) install the latest dkms drivers according to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/UpgradingAlsa/DKMS
3) download the patch, cd /usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer, and apply the patch
with "sudo patch -p5"
4) reboot and test.

(Tip: when finished testing, to revert step 3, you can run "sudo apt-get
install pulseaudio --reinstall")
