Update. screen did freeze up once today on kernel 3.2.0-26 but I was able to do a full shutdown and restart and it has been ok. It still seems like it is "better" though. Very infrequent freezes sometimes runs all day without a problem but this still occurs once in awhile and appears to be fixable by a reboot. I think using the ubuntu Startup Disk Creator instead of pendrive linux installer has made a difference for the better though that is just a guess based on empirical evidence that this install is running better with much less freeze problem.
