I have already solved the problem. Unfortunately I am at the office
right now and my Ubuntu is at home, therefore I cannot give you the
exact details. I think the problem was with the ALSA (?) driver, where a
USB device was given a wrong ID (?). This didn't happen in Ubuntu 6.06
but it did happen in the next two versions (I now have the latest
Kubuntu version installed). Although I'm a newbie Linux user, it didn't
take long for me to realize the problem (and solve it by reading the
forums), but I believe it can be very frustrating for the enthousiasts
who do not feel so comfortable with computers. If you need additional
(and more precise) description of the problem, please tell me so and I
will try to find my notes (and/or look at the modifications I did).

The crash took place the first time when I tried to access the sound
properties from KDE.

No sound with LiveCD; I use USB Logitech headset. I didn't have sound with 6.10
either (only with 6.06)
