I am trying to pick my way through upstart and /etc/init to find out what is supposed to start X. I suppose it is some sort of desktop manager,. A bit of a grep shows that gdm-simple-slave and gdm-binary are both running. That, in turn, led me to /var/log/gdm:0.log , which suggested I delete /tmp/.X1-log That did no good at all, and I am back where I started.
