wretched thing - I was still editing that.  Continued:

and then 10 things answered 'yes'' ending with
Unity 3D supported: yes

So obviously:
1) Unity does need X
2) X is not starting.

I am trying to pick my way through upstart and /etc/init to find out
what is supposed to start X.  I suppose it is some sort of desktop
manager,.  A bit of a grep shows that gdm-simple-slave and gdm-binary
are both running.  That, in turn, led me to /var/log/gdm:0.log , which
suggested I delete /tmp/.X1-log

That did no good at all, and I am back where I started.  After a reboot
I got what is in the next screenshot.
