Hello, I just confirmed this one (as opposed to file a new bug), I hope its OK...
I have this error on two ThinkPads T42, with Ubuntu 12.04. I installed cheese, and the window stays black. Starting from the terminal, I get several (as above) Gtk-WARNING messages and finally the warning 'could not negotiate format'. I used a Logitech E2500 series webcam and a Creative NX Ultra one.
