Re comment #133 above from wlx, I have experienced this problem with my 8600 GT card on all nvidia versions since I installed ubuntu 12.04, i.e. 295.40 and all versions through to 302.17. I have tried the installers from nvidia site, and also xorg-edgers ppa. I never had this problem in the 4 years before 12.04. For me, X will not run longer than an hour or so before it crashes, usually when I am just using a couple of terminals and the browser in Gnome Shell (no video or flash playing).
