I have this issue too, on 12.04. It is impossible to switch between
Headphones and Built-in laptop speakers, they both work together.  I did
not have this issue on 10.04.

Panasonic Toughbook CF-y7.
Running Gnome fallback/classic, though it is the same problem on Unity.

In the sound settings I've tried switching between Analogue Stereo
Duplex and the other options but that doesn't help.
