Manually examining the backtrace with gdb seems to indicate a problem with reading local package database, so I tried purging all of the local database, and then running 'apt-get update', this did not fix it. After that I tried manually fetching and replacing all of the packages which use libapt-pkg and libapt-pkg itself, this also did not fix the problem.
