Update: installed daily x64 daily 12.10 build, but issues with shutdown and reboot persisted. However, after downgrading to 32-bit version of 12.04, all issues appear to be resolved. I'm satisfied with this arrangement, although I'm still puzzled as to why the 64-bit install was so error prone, despite my laptop's architecture supporting it.
