You have to understand that ffmpeg has always been steeped in
controversy. Although the decision might seem straightforward to you,
you aren't the principle financial stake holder in the decision.
Canonical could end up facing a lawsuit. Companies like Dolby typically
have teams of lawyers who work fulltime generating revenue for
themselves and the company simply through litigation.
