When migrating from release 11.10 to 12.04, I attempted it, (a couple of times), through the "Update Manager", but each time encountered a fatal error. I then created a "live 12.04" boot CD, and migrated by initiating a full install. When running 12.04 and using the Ubuntu drop-down menu, and selecting the "Shut Down" option, my system "hung", and the only way to shut it down was by "crashing" it. On later attempts I noted that the "sudo shutdown -h now" command did work.
This is where I'm a bit hazy, but when I affirmatively responded to a subsequent "Up Date Manager" patch request, my kernal release version was promoted from 3.2 to 3.4, and with it, my system "Shut Down" option worked as expected, (and everything else seemed to work as expected). Then, a week later when I responded affirmatively to the next "Up Date Manager" patch request, amongst other things, my kernal release was reverted back to 3.2 and the bug reappeared. I would like to run with the 3.4 kernal release, but don't know how to obtain it.
