I've encountered this problem as well, only in my case the problem
extends to the entire nm-applet menu.  All submenus of the dialog (eg,
"More networks") come up entirely blank, and even the items on the main
menu are entirely non-responsive.  Logging out/restarting nm-applet
temporarily fixes the problem, but my computer has yet to go more than
48 hours without producing this problem.

Potentially-relevant notes:
- I was not having this problem on 11.04.  It only appeared after an upgrade to 
12.04.  
- I'm running a Lenovo T420
