I am using A4 paper. I also added a line '%%Page: 1 1'. This time around, the commented testfile worked, but the uncommented testfile still acted strange: it printed at double or quadruple size, with a very coarse dot pattern.
I also re-tested with the hpijs driver, as you requested. This driver, which previously didn't work at all with my parallel-to-usb cable, now works fine with this same cable, and prints both versions of the testfile correctly.
