Installing cups-filters from precise-proposed fixed the problem (bug 1004479) for me.
The test from #21 is a success. Printing still works as it should after the following commands: lpadmin -p <printer> -o pdftops-renderer-default=gs lpadmin -p <printer> -o pdftops-max-image-resolution-default=1440 lpadmin -p <printer> -o psdebug=true Awesome!
