jimav, ah I noticed that you have the Oneiric version of acroread but your 
using Precise. Try the following via the Terminal:
sudo apt-get -y remove acroread && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y 
dist-upgrade && sudo apt-get -y install acroread

That should install the newest acroread for Precise (9.5.1).
