i'm using thinkpad t42. i installed skype and tested using skype's echo service. i could hear the response but couldn't hear myself.
so what i did was go to System>Preferences>Multimedia Systems Selector. The tab shows "Audio". i changed the default Input Plugin from "ALSA ..." to "OSS..." and the microphone worked. i read in the help button of the same dialog that different applications use different sound architectures. apparently skype is using OSS instead of ALSA.
