I also found out that after some time of using Ubuntu I can't switch to a terminal session anymore. Using Strg-Alt-F2 for example does not work after a while. The screen turns black and that's it. Pressing Strg-Alt-F7 brings me back to Unity again. The shutdown works fine as long I can switch to a terminal. If I can't the shutdown does not work either.
