We have 14 computers with the exact same config working perfect!
(Some with Windows XP, some with Ubuntu 10.04 / 11.04 or 11.10)
Two computers did have a complete fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64bit.
Since than complete Lockups about once or twice a day with the 12.04 systems.
Even ping or ssh from another machine does not work anymore...

I installed the (default) noveau driver and didn't try (yet!) Unity 2D.
Extra info:

- Intel Core i3 550
- VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation Device 0ca5 (rev a2)
- Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI
Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 06)

Everytime a Lockup occures the syslog tells: "kernel: [ 2997.449936] [drm]
nouveau 0000:01:00.0: vm flush timeout: engine 0"
