We have 14 computers with the exact same config working perfect! (Some with Windows XP, some with Ubuntu 10.04 / 11.04 or 11.10) Two computers did have a complete fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64bit. Since than complete Lockups about once or twice a day with the 12.04 systems. Even ping or ssh from another machine does not work anymore...
I installed the (default) noveau driver and didn't try (yet!) Unity 2D.
