@Brendan Brigham - yes I think I should more correctly have said that there appeared to be a variety of issues causing the hanging on the other bug report, rather than suggesting they were all relating to video stressing. That wasn't my intention.
Also the actual type of hang reported appears to be different too - some requiring power off, others fixable through keyboard intervention. I suspect that there are many root issues on that thread that should really be reported separately but Ubuntu 12.04 hanging is a catch-all. As with the 'solution' I've just posted, I can quite imagine that I am the only person on this bug report that is suffering from exactly this Logitech->Dell issue. I guess it does point to a core instability somewhere between drivers and the kernel though. Perhaps all these reports are related? Who knows? All I do know is that something in 2.6x kernel/drivers was able to deal correctly with my Logitech C-UAK42 mini receiver keyboard controller and since 3.x it's broken. Anyway, good luck with your issue and fingers crossed that I really have found a workaround. This has been driving me mad!
