I also think that fglrx could be the reason. (fglrx is the proprietary driver from ATI, right?) I removed the driver and I had no problem with the shutdown. But as soon as I installed it again, I wasn't able to shut down again.
But I only started / shut down the laptop about 5 times without fxglr, as I usually use my desktop and also not using fglrx works not very well for me as: 1.) fan runs a lot more 2.) battery runs a lot less longer 3.)
