FYI this problem has almost completely gone away after upgrading nvidia- current from 295.40-0ubuntu1 to the 295.49-0ubuntu1~precise~xup1 version in the ubuntu-x-swat PPA: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates
