I would say that running it as root does *not* solve it, because it does
not use the global menu. To be sure, the icons display (and in the
correct location, floating to the left rather than leaving the space for
icons blank and putting the icons in the text position so that it
doesn't all line up, as can be seen in the Unity global menu), but it's
not the Unity global menu, so I don't think it's a solution.
