I should probably point out that this system was upgraded from Oneiric,
and that on first-boot, I had several problems with both Empathy's
account manager and colord crashing (both reported with apportd).  In
the end, I had to selectively clear .folders (.gnome2, .local, .cache
and .gconf?) to fix the problem.  While that is unrelated to the gnome-
terminal issue here, it makes me suspect that some Unity-specific user
settings are somehow being corrupted (or not updated correctly) during
the upgrade process.
